On Wednesday May 30, 2001 the Bryan Police
Departments bicycle patrol unit became a reality. Ptl. Viers, who was
instrumental in organizing the unit, along with Sgt Zawodny and Ptl. Grimes
began three days of training. Training included maintenance of bikes, how
to patrol on bikes, how to climb and descend steps and how to
perform take down of suspects.
The purpose of the bike patrol is to increase patrol coverage in areas where traditional patrol vehicles are limited. Parks, alleys and parking lots are just a few areas where the bike patrols may easily maneuver. In addition to the patrol function the bike patrol unit will be a valuable asset during the Day in the Park and the Bryan Jubilee. Bikes are fitted with flashing lights, a sounder buzzer, and a rear carry all pack that will carry police equipment. The bikes are marked with police markings and the officers will have bike patrol police uniforms to easily distinguish them from civilian bike riders. During May of 2002 Ptl. Nichols went through five days of training to become our fourth bicycle officer. This allows us to have a bike officer assigned to every shift. In May of 2003 Tracy Williamson became our fifth certified bike patrol officer. She replaces Ptl. Viers who is on a temporary duty assignment. In July of 2006 Ptl. Ridgway and Reserve Officer Kline were selected as bicycle officers. They replace Ptl Grimes who resigned as a bicycle patrol officer and Ptl. Cory Nichols who became our new K-9 officer. Officer's Mario Rodriguez and Corey Bush were certified through the state as bicycle officers.
